How to hide control panel applets!   PDF  Print  E-mail

Have you ever wanted to hide some of the options viewed on the control panel? Perhaps you don't want prying eyes, and little eyes, to play with some of the options available at default. No need for expensive software, all that's required is a little work and some basic computer skills.

For Windows 95/98/Me

Locate and open the 'CONTROL.INI' file.  It can usually be found under C:\WINDOWS.  Now find the line that says '[don't load]' - without the quotes, of course.  If it's not there, then simply create it at the bottom of the file.

For each applet you want to hide, just add the applets name followed by an equal sign and the word no.  So if I wanted access.cpl to be hidden I would type 'access.cpl=no' - again, without the quotes.

For Windows 2000/XP

Open up your registry by going to file - run and then type 'regedit' without the quotes.  Find the following key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load]

For whatever applet you want to hide, just create a new string name with the applets name (ex: 'desk.cpl') and set the value equal to 'no' - and that's it!  Logoff or reboot Windows for the changes to take effect.  Below are some common applet values to use.

access.cpl - Accessibility Applet
appwiz.cpl - Add/Remove Programs Applet
console.cpl - Console Applet
